Beyond the Food: What to Write About as a Food Blogger

Figuring out what to write as a food blogger might seem a little obvious. You write about food, duh! 

However, if you’re involved in the culinary world in any capacity, you know that there is so much that goes into food. As a blogger in today’s competitive landscape, you have to set yourself apart from others, and to do this successfully you have to get pretty narrow with your focus. 

Are you passionate about learning proper techniques? Are you a home cook that measures ingredients with a pinch of this and a dash of that? 

Do you have ties to ethnic cuisine? Do you have to eat gluten-free because you have Celiac disease? 

All of these things matter and play a huge role in choosing what types of food and cooking-related topics to blog about. 

Choosing a Niche

First things first, to get started as a food blogger you have to pick a niche. Get as narrow as you can, really honing in on a particular audience. 

Some great examples of this are gluten-free bloggers, paleo bloggers, and dessert bloggers. From this specific topic, you can branch out into related categories, but you’ll want to do your best to always link in your primary theme. 

This will help build authority with Google and your audience, which in turn boosts traffic and strengthens your blog. 

Food Types

Now that you have a niche, it’s time to focus on the fun stuff - creating the recipes! 

As you get started, you want to do your best to have all the basics covered. I’m talking homemade sauces, seasoning mixes, flour blends, waffles, pancakes, everything that is a staple in everyday life. 

As you do this, gear the recipes to fit within your primary niche. If you’re making a basic pancake don’t just make pancakes, create gluten-free pancakes, or vegan pancakes, or paleo pancakes. You get the idea. 

Once you’ve got all the staples covered, you can begin branching out into new flavor variations and unique creations. 

Beyond the Recipes

There’s nothing wrong with posting basic recipes. It’s a great way to build a solid foundation for growth! 

However, I highly recommend connecting with why you started blogging. Are you interested in the history of dishes? Obsessed with preserving family recipes? 

Incorporate this into your posts! It’s a fantastic way to nail a consistent tone that readers will recognize and can help keep writing fun. 

Once your blog is established and has a decent authority score, you can even branch out into other loosely related topics that aren’t exactly recipes. For instance, you can work on product or service reviews, including round-ups of your must-have kitchen tools, or discuss your favorite cookbooks. 

I don’t recommend doing this often or straying too far from the world of cooking, but it can be helpful when the recipes get a little monotonous. If you want to boost your income a bit, you can use these posts to incorporate affiliate links or partner with sponsorships, too! 

In Conclusion

When starting a food blog it’s obvious you’ll be writing about food. However, before you begin posting random recipes, it’s important to pick a primary niche or topic. 

From there, you’ll want to cover all the basic recipes included under that theme. Then, you can branch out to different flavors, methods, etc., and can even begin to incorporate posts not directly related to recipes.
